Is it Healthy to Cook in Cast Iron Pots & Pans?

The powerhouses of all kitchen equipment, cast iron pans, skillets, and griddles boast a natural nonstick coating when properly seasoned. When seasoned well, cast iron will be stick-resistant and require no additional oil. This nonstick surface is free of synthetic chemicals and requires fewer oils than aluminum or stainless steel options.

Cast iron is also the perfect bakeware for making homemade baked goods and casseroles. From crispy crusts and flaky textures on cakes to quick breads and pies, you’re sure to make delicious meals that rival your favorite bakery and restaurants in no time.

Our cast iron saucepans feature durable cast iron construction that ensures years of easy gourmet cooking, making it a must-have for every home chef. The enameled cast iron ensures heat distribution and retention, while the exterior promises easy cleaning. From the stove to the oven, cast iron cookware is well worth the investment.

What Shouldn’t Be Cooked in Cast Iron?

There’s so much to love about seasoned cast iron cookware. After all, they’re a must-have for so many  meals ranging from breakfast to dessert. Not to mention, it has the ability to cook a variety of healthy meals by using water-based methods such as braising, poaching, broiling and grilling. However, as good as your skillet can be for making all these favorites, traditional cast iron pans may not be a tool suited for all foods.

It has often been found that cooking smelly foods in cast iron skillets and pans can cause a lingering odor in them. This is most notably found in garlic, some types of fish, and certain types of cheeses. However, one way to get rid of the smell should this occur is to leave the pot in the oven at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes.

If your pan is still fairly new and not fully seasoned yet, sticky foods like eggs may also be hard to remove. Fortunately, we have the cleaning tips you need to make your pots, baking dishes, skillets, and pans as good as new.

Caring for Cast Iron Skillets

Cast iron retains heat for a long period of time and food will continue to cook even after the heat is turned off. That’s why it’s important to remove food from the cookware immediately after or right before it reaches the desired internal temperature. Here are a few other ways to help maintain your skillets look and performance:

  • Immediately after use, wipe out the pan with an oiled towel or cloth.
  • To avoid rust, always dry immediately when the pan is wet.
  • Sprinkle salt into the dry pan, scrub and wipe clean to remove food residue.
  • Do not use steel wool, coarse scouring pads, or powder to scrub.
