How to Use & Apply Contour

The first step to contouring your face is to decide which areas you wish to darken. Popular areas to contour, as mentioned above, include the hairline and jawline, under cheekbones, and along each side of the nose.

To achieve the shadowed look, take a damp sponge or a contouring brush and blend the contouring cream, liquid, or powder into skin.

You can also use contour to highlight an area of the face! To do that, use a contour formula that is one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Apply to areas such as the middle of your forehead, your chin, the bridge of nose, and right under your eyes.

If you are using a cream, stick, or liquid contour to accent your facial areas, take a damp sponge or face brush and blend it into skin. If you are instead using a powder, simply sweep the product over skin, brushing away any excess powder contour with a makeup brush.

You’ll usually apply contour after you’ve already applied foundation and concealer products. The cream, liquid, and stick types of contour products can be applied on top of foundation. You can do the same with powder contour, but you should first add a light layer of traditional facial powder over the foundation first. This allows you to then use powder contour products, which when used all together and in this order, will help to create a smooth, consistent application. Choose a foundation that is the same shade - or close - to your natural skin tone for best results!
