What is an Automatic Watch?
An automatic watch movement uses internal mechanics like a rotor or metal weight to power the watch and keep it ticking. The rotor spins within the watch every time the wearer moves their wrist. That motion is then transferred into energy that winds the watch automatically, keeping time with little to no manual effort on your part.
That said, automatic watches do require winding sometimes, especially when the watch has gone a long time without being worn. If the watch is left to sit and is not worn, the internal rotor will not have been spinning. Because of that, the watch will likely be without power until it’s wound again or worn on the wrist.
Are Automatic Watches Durable & Reliable?
Even with the intricate inner-workings of automatic watches, they are designed to last a lifetime as long as the watch is taken care of properly.
The good news is that the main way to keep an automatic watch ticking is to simply wear it! If the watch has stopped after a period of minimal wear, you can either gently shake it with the dial facing up or put it on and move your wrist a few times. This will get the hands moving once again.
Aside from the actual wearing of the watch to keep it running, you’ll want to take special care in other ways to ensure it’s long-lasting use.It’s important to always keep the watch dry and clean. Periodically, wipe the watch face with a dry, soft cloth. And while a watch may be listed and described as waterproof, try your best to avoid wearing the watch when in water - especially water at extreme high or low temperatures.
To ensure accuracy and optimal function of your automatic watch, consider taking it in for professional servicing every three to five years.
