How to Choose the Right Gas Grill

With so many gas grill options available, it can be difficult to know which one best fits your food prep needs. So let’s look at the factors to consider when choosing a grill, and hopefully you’ll feel more confident in making the right choice!

  • Grill Size

You’ll want to be sure to take the size of the grill into consideration when deciding on the right grill you need for your home. The size of the grill also determines how many burners are available to you for cooking purposes. The more burners you have, the more flexible you can be when it comes to multi-zone cooking. To find the right size, consider the number of people you usually grill for, and also take into account if you’ll be grilling for larger groups at some point.

Small grills usually have 1-3 burners, and are perfect for cooking for small families. The largest grills available can offer up to 8 burners, and are great for feeding large groups of people. These large grill options may even offer other cooking apparatuses like rotisserie cooking systems and sear burners. They also offer cabinets that give you storage space to keep grilling essentials close by.

  • Grill Grate

The type of grate that a gas grill has can also be a factor to consider. Most grill grates are made of steel, porcelain, or cast iron.

Steel or stainless steel grates are available at the lower price points, due to the fact that they are the least durable of the group. However, stainless steel lasts a bit longer and offers better non-stick properties than a plain steel grate.

Porcelain-coated grates fall in the middle in terms of price. The surface can chip, so caring for and cleaning porcelain grill grates requires a bit of attention. Do not use a metal scraper when cleaning a porcelain-coated grate.

Cast iron grates offer maximum durability, even heat distribution, and top-level heat retention. Cast iron does cost the most, and requires the most clean-up and maintenance.

Other Gas Grill Factors to Consider

After deciding on the right grill size and grate material, consider the following to narrow down the type of gas grill you’ll add to your backyard entertaining space:

  • Various ignition types are available, including push-button ignition or electronic ignition. There are also some gas grills that are manually lit with matches. Electric ignition is the most reliable, but does require batteries to work.
  • Most gas grills feature knobs that give cooks more control over the cooking temperature. For added functionality, you can even find some grills that feature LED-lit knobs for viability in low-light situations.
  • Grills may offer the following bonus features for added effectiveness and ease of cleanup: grease pans, fuel gauges, side burners, warming racks, and more!
