Wide Shoes for Toddlers & Kids

Have you noticed that your child’s feet are just that bit wider than usual? Finding properly-fitting kids’ shoes is vital for healthy foot growth and development, but parents often struggle to find the right shoes for babies and children. This is especially true as children seem to outgrow footwear and clothing in the blink of an eye. Shop Kohl’s to find kids’ wide-width sneakers, boots, and other shoes that are just as comfy as they are stylish!

What to Look for in Wide Shoes

One of the most important elements to look for in wide shoes is flexibility. In most cases, if a shoe doesn’t have a flexible tongue that can be folded back all of the way, then the wide size might not cut it. Your child needs to be able to slip their feet into the wide opening of their shoes without any issues.

How to Tell if Your Child Needs Wide Shoes

Feet come in all shapes and sizes; fortunately, shoes do as well. If your child has wide feet, it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re fitting them in the right shoes. Putting them in ill-fitting shoes could lead to all manner of foot problems as well as impede natural, healthy foot development. Even though they’re only 1/8” wider than medium width shoes, kids’ wide width shoes can help kids feel more comfortable and perform their best.

Kids’ Shoe Sizing Tips & Advice

Kids' shoe sizes can be confusing to navigate. Unlike clothing sizes, your child's shoe size doesn't correspond to their age, unless they're a baby. Because baby and toddler's feet can grow half a size or more every few months, you should measure their feet every 2 months to avoid putting your child in shoes that are too small.

To measure the width, have your child stand up with both shoes on. Check to see if the shoe fits their foot's shape by feeling for any pressure against the widest parts of their feet. The ball of their foot should be comfortable and snug all the way around, without any pinching or irritation.

To ensure proper depth, run your thumb over the top of the shoe. You should feel the fabric ripple slightly. If the fabric is too tight, the shoe may not be deep enough. But if you can pinch the fabric into a ridge, it's likely too deep.

If your child is trying on a low-cut shoe, feel how much space there is between their toes and the top of the shoe, or vamp. A wide gap means the shoe is too deep. If their foot presses uncomfortably against the vamp, the shoe is too shallow.

Next, press the tip of your thumb against the toe of their shoes to check the length. Your kid's toes should have enough room to wiggle around without pressing against the front of the shoes, but not so much room that their feet can slide forward.

Finally, take a look at the shoe straps. Because kids' feet change constantly, you want shoes with adjustable laces or hook-and-loop closures that let you customize the fit.
