What is a Facial Peel?

Simply put, a facial peel is a chemical exfoliant that works to alleviate many common skin concerns and issues.

As you begin to search for the right chemical peel for your skin, make sure you really only look at peels that have a pH of around 2.0. If the pH is at or below that level, it means the entire percentage of that ingredient will work to exfoliate your skin. However, if the pH is raised to any level above that 2.0 mark, less of the product will actively work on helping your skin.

Essentially, a facial peel is a more potent version of chemical exfoliating products you find in the beauty section of most stores. And because of that, they do require caution when using at home as part of your skin care routine.

Types of Facial Peels

Facial peels can be separated into three categories: superficial, medium, and deep. The names of the categories are pretty self-explanatory.

Superficial peels are more gentle and take care of surface issues like minor discoloration or rough patches. Medium peels go a bit deeper than the superficial style, reaching the middle layer of the skin and working to combat problems like scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. The last category of peel is the deep peel, which penetrates the farthest, helping with damaged skin cells, more pronounced scarring, deep wrinkles, and skin discoloration.

Most peels found on store shelves are superficial ones. And anytime you do decide to use a medium or deep peel, you should be very careful with its use and application. These products can give off some intense side effects, so consult with a medical professional before taking on any chemical peel treatment.

Facial Peel Ingredients

There is a wide range of ingredients that can be found in facial peels, ranging from mild to very strong. Popular mild ingredients include natural enzymes derived from fruit. These mild ingredients are good for those with sensitive skin. A step up from this is a group that includes mild acids like mandelic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid. These acids treat acne, smooth the skin, hydrate, and help with discoloration. Also, they won’t irritate the skin as some of the more intense acids we’ll discuss next.

When it comes to medium or deep peels, ingredients include glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and combinations of previously mentioned acids, too. These stronger acids will have some side effects and will need “downtime”, which means you’ll need to refrain from applying certain products on your skin or will notice visible side effects like redness or peeling for anywhere from a couple hours to even up to 10 days.

Applying a Facial Peel

Before applying the peel to your face, test it on a small patch of your skin in a discreet place. Give it a couple days to see if the product causes any kind of reaction. After checking the spot after 48 hours, wait another 48 hours to see if there’s any delayed reaction. If there’s no issue, you’re set to go. But still make sure you’re slowly incorporating the peel into your routine, and not just diving in headfirst with too much product right off the bat!

When starting out, apply the peel in small time increments, as low as just 30 seconds. So the first time you apply the peel, put the product on and leave it in place for 30 seconds. Rinse off after that time with lukewarm water. The next time you apply it, likely a week later, leave it on your face for one minute. Repeat this process each week, increasing the time you leave the peel on until you reach the recommended maximum time. Some products may allow you to leave it on for five minutes, while others might allow it to be applied for up to 10 minutes. Follow the directions on the product and don’t go over the recommended time limit!

After your peel is done, you should follow a skin care routine that uses mild products. This includes using a hyaluronic acid product to help hydrate your skin, which could be red and dry from the peel. You can also use mild moisturizers that offer ceramides and cholesterol, which both help to repair and build a barrier to keep moisture in. It’s also important to apply sunscreen whenever you’re heading outdoors following a facial peel, as your skin is going to be more susceptible to damage from the sun’s rays.
