Steam cleaners work by turning ordinary tap water into deep-cleaning steam. In order to kill germs and other harmful particles, steam cleaners need to heat water to at least 225 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, the most powerful steam cleaners can heat water up to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, some surfaces should NOT be steam cleaned, due to various factors.
Anything that can be damaged due to heat exposure, should not be steam cleaned. This includes items or surfaces that feature water-based paint or cardboard, as these materials will be ruined by the high temperatures. Pourous surfaces, delicate fabrics like silk, and waxed wood surfaces should also not be steam cleaned.
