Bunk Beds vs. Loft Beds
Bunk beds and loft beds are most commonly seen in kids’ rooms, but they’re also widely used inside dorm rooms, hostels, and a variety of other living spaces. Look out for bedding options with ladders or staircases that make it easy to get up and down. Like bunk beds, loft beds are great space savers. However, there are a few differences between the two.
Bunk beds are essentially two beds stacked on top of each other to make efficient use of vertical space. They give each child (or adult) their own sleeping space as opposed to making them share the same bed. These beds can be twin over twin, twin over full, or even full over full.
Loft beds, on the other hand, consist of open space on the bottom of the structure rather than another bed. This leaves space for a desk, storage, seating, or other furniture. For even more storage options, try a staircase loft bed with drawers or a loft bed with shelves.
How Old Should a Child Be for a Bunk Bed?
Our collection of bunk beds are for both young kids and tweens. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the recommended age for bunk bed usage is 6 years old. However, only older kids should sleep on the top bunk while younger children should stay on the bottom. How High Should a Bunk Be?
Bunk beds come in an assortment of heights and configurations, however, the average bunk is typically between 5 ½ and 6 feet tall. Be sure to measure the area and floor space where the bunk bed will be as the height can affect how well it fits inside your room. It’s important to leave at least 2 feet of space between the top of the bunk bed and the ceiling so as to avoid bumping the ceiling.
Bunk Bed Finish Materials
Depending on the bunk bed style, there are several finishes you can find. Metal is a popular choice due to its durability and resistance to rust. It’s a material that would look great in rooms with modern designs. Another popular material is wood. Strong wood bunk beds are available in a wide variety of natural-looking shades sure to complement a room’s rustic or farmhouse decor. Both are great choices and the decision is simply a matter of preference.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

- Only use properly sized mattresses on the bed.
- Keep the bunk bed a safe distance away from ceiling fans and windows.
- Don’t have more than one person on the top bunk at the same time.
